Teachers, counselors, parents, and students are welcome at this informational session for the Summer Science Program.

One of the oldest and most successful pre-college enrichment programs, the Summer Science Program (SSP) offers students an exciting immersion into real-world, hands-on science. Students perform a hands-on astronomical research project from start to finish, determining the orbit of an asteroid from their own observations, measurements, and software.

The 2009 SSP program fee of $3,750 covers all costs: tuition, room & board, supplies, and transportation. The Ahmanson Foundation has funded full program fee waivers for eligible residents of Los Angeles County. To be eligible, a student must be either:

  • from an ethnic background that is under-represented in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM): African American, Latino/Hispanic, Native American, Native Hawaiian, Alaskan Native, or Pacific Islander.
    -or-
  • from an economically disadvantaged household, defined as meeting the same income criteria that public schools use for free or reduced price lunch. (To verify this after a student has been admitted, we will ask the parent to complete the SSP Financial Aid Application.)

The fee waiver applies to eligible LA County students who have applied and been admitted to SSP through the usual process. In other words, there is no preference for, or discrimination against, LA County applicants in the admissions decisions. Applicants from Southern California who are not eligible for the fee waiver may apply for SSP's generous need-based financial aid.
